Rum
Rum came into my life through whisky.
At a tasting hosted by my favourite wine & spirits merchant, a glass appeared in front of me. The colour of whisky, almost the nose of whisky, and on the palate I was still following the same trail.
Except it was rum.
I'd just stepped into Rumland with an HSE finished in a whisky cask, without even realising I was drinking rum.
Obviously, this required further investigation. 😄
Some rums are round and indulgent, almost as thick and sweet as syrup. Others take you somewhere entirely different. Elsewhere, I find wax, wood, turpentine…
Suddenly, I'm back in my grandfather's workshop.

Independent Rum Bottlers
In rum, independent bottlers have a freedom that I particularly enjoy. They can select a cask from a producer, explore rums from different origins, continue the maturation, work on a finish or create their own blends. There are many different approaches, and that is precisely what makes their work so interesting.
Behind these bottles, I look for a nose and a palate, but also genuine curiosity: someone capable of showcasing a rum without necessarily recreating what already exists. An independent bottling does not have to be rare to be interesting. Above all, it should have something to say.
That is also why independent bottlers have an important place in my rum selection at Distillicious: they make it possible to discover producers, origins and sometimes combinations that you will not find everywhere.
